We are pleased to announce the publication of a postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)-dedicated open-access Special Collection in the International Journal of Maternal and Child Health and AIDS (IJMA): Implementation Research Evidence for Prevention and Treatment of Postpartum Hemorrhage in High Burden Low-and-Middle-Income Countries.
The Special Collection contains eight original pilot research studies assessing the introduction of heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) for PPH prevention and tranexamic acid (TXA) for PPH treatment. The implementation research featured spans 9 low-and-middle-income countries and assessed the safety, acceptability, feasibility, and appropriate use of the two medicines.
The Mama-Pikin Foundation, in collaboration with the RCH Directorate in the Ministry of Health, Sierra Leone, participated in the research study below:
Integrating Heat-Stable Carbetocin and Tranexamic Acid for Prevention and Management of Postpartum Hemorrhage in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Five-Country Pilot Implementation Study
This mixed-methods study assessed the safe and appropriate use of HSC and TXA in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. The results collectively showed the feasibility of introducing and integrating the medicines into routine care.
We want to thank Concept Foundation for guest-editing, all authors and reviewers for their contributions, and IJMA for their efforts in producing this Special Collection. The research studies provide insightful and valuable evidence on the feasible introduction and high provider acceptance of using HSC and TXA in line with the 2017 & 2018 WHO recommendations. We believe this warrants consideration for their introduction as new and lesser-used medicines to improve PPH quality of care, particularly in cold-chain-challenged settings.
