On June 17, 2023, the Sierra Leone Postgraduate Programs in OB/GYN and Pediatrics held their Annual Mid-Year Review and Awards Ceremony. The event was a moment to reflect on the programs’ successes and challenges and to honor the dedication of the residents, faculty, and staff, including the ODCH/PCMH midwives and nurses. Together, residents and faculty presented 28 awards to those who made a significant impact.

Dr. Nellie Bell, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, presented an award to Sierra Leone’s first locally trained pediatricianDr. Michael Akpoke! Dr. Akpoke began his training in 2018, persevering through challenges and limited resources. Today, he stands as Sierra Leone’s first pediatric specialist, internationally certified as a Member of the West African College of Physicians.

A heartfelt thank you to the faculty, trainers, and colleagues who have supported Dr. Akpoke and the Pediatric Postgraduate Training Program on this historic journey!
